Mumbai

The first part of our Adventure begins!

sunny 28 °C

We keep saying to ourselves "We're here!" Its like actually reality after so long! The taxi ride from the city was crazy - cars, buses, people and animals all fight for a space on the road and the noise of horns blowing is immense! The horn means "get out of my way now", or sometimes "im changing lanes whether u like it or not!" Not that any one actually sticks to a lane!
On the way to our hotel we passed the Gateway of India and the Taj Hotel, which we came back later to see closer. Such amazing architectural feats, the detail is astounding and in real life they look much more amazing than in photos.
We are staying at Bentley's Hotel, which is right in the heart of Colaba and just around the corner from the Gateway. Our room is great, nice bed, fan, clean, with balcony overlooking street... and the weather is hot and sticky, but not unbearable - we both love it! It rained today (16/8) and we were caught in it, but getting wet isn't actually a nuisance.
Today we had the busiest day! We started the day just walking, and we walked for km's! It was such a good way to really see Mumbai, starting with the Colaba markets, then the World Trade Centers (hmm yes sounds familiar! The site next to these is where a huge slum used to be, that Shantaram lived in and operated a medical clinic, if u have read the book u will know what I mean).
We had the yummiest vegetarian lunch at Nariman Point and then walked to see Flora Fountain, the High Courts, the University and Oval Maiden , where unfortunately no one was playing cricket!
After we conquered Victoria Station, via the underpass (so many ppl!) and also booked our train tickets on to Ahmedabad Fri night. We are going sleeper style but without airconditioning, just to test ourselves a little, see if we can rough it!
So all that in only 1 day - feet are a little sore, few blisters, but SO MUCH FUN!
AAARGH, still can't believe we are here!
See ya later alligators for now!!

Sarah-Joss!

Sounds like a great adventure so far!

Did you require IndRail train passes? Are you just booking train tickets as you go along? My wife & I are exploring southern india for 3 weeks in November, but do not know whether to wing it or to have pre-booked train journeys and/or a IndRail pass.

Hope you can help & enjoy the rest of your time!
